An Overview

Alexandria Health Department (AHD) is seeking a passionate, self-motivated candidate to join us as our Community Engagement Manager. This position will lead the AHD chronic disease program development work, focusing on topics such as health literacy and asthma by centering the voices of the people most impacted by those issues. The Community Engagement Manager will oversee the Population Health division’s community engagement work, including the supervision of Community Health Workers and an Outreach Specialist. This position uses program development, implementation, and evaluation skills to ensure that all new and current initiatives are data-driven, human-centered, and impactful. This individual will also support existing coalitions such as the City’s Healthy Homes Network and the implementation of its Healthy Homes Action Plan. The Community Engagement Manager will work across divisions in AHD to advise different staff on engagement best practices and how to incorporate resident input into their service delivery and programs. This role is grant-funded until July 2026.

The Opportunity – Examples of Work

Performs project management duties, such as defining strategies and objectives, planning and organizing actions, and ensuring accountability for deadlines and deliverables;
Identifies and applies for grants to support contract positions and advance chronic disease efforts;
Manages AHD’s chronic disease programs and helps staff related community coalitions, providing administrative and subject matter expertise support as needed;
Works with impacted residents using human-centered design methods to develop, implement, and evaluate new initiatives that address health disparities;
Supervises a minimum of three outreach and engagement staff; may manage interns, volunteers, and additional contract staff;
Drafts reports and delivers engaging presentations to community members and stakeholders on health priorities;
Researches, analyzes, and implements best practices on program design, development, and evaluation;
Participates in and leads community meetings held during and/or after normal business hours and weekends;
Serves as a technical expert in community conditions, health equity, public health program planning, and community engagement;
Analyzes public health strategies, services, and resources in relation to defined goals and objectives;
Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum & Additional Requirements

To qualify for this position, all candidates must possess a Master of Public Health or any equivalent combination of education, experience and training; three years of experience in public health and/or community engagement, with an emphasis on project management, implementation, evaluation, and reporting; at least one year of experience in planning and implementing public health projects involving a broad range of stakeholders and developing policy, systems and environmental changes to improve public health; must be able and willing to provide reliable transportation for work purposes; required to maintain a valid driver's license and adhere to Virginia Department of Health's driver safety policy.

Preferred Qualifications

To be considered an ideal candidate one should have at least one year of developing and/or managing coalitions; have at least three years of supervisory experience.

Notes

This position requires the successful completion of pre-employment background checks including but not limited to driving record check, previous education and employment verification, and criminal background check.

Work is conducted in various environments, including outdoors on occasion and in community settings. This position is required to occasionally work on weekend days and evenings to attend and/or facilitate community meetings.

This is a grant funded position with a tentative end date of July 2026.
