Summary
American Progress has an immediate opening for a Broadcast Media Manager. This position involves leading the organization’s radio and podcast strategy—including pitching, booking, and preparing staff for radio and podcasts interviews—and serving as lead producer of the Center for American Progress Action Fund’s podcast, “The Tent.”
This candidate will field inquiries from radio hosts and producers about American Progress’ experts and reports. They will also play a key role in shaping how American Progress engages in this new fractured media environment and grow the organization’s relationships with nontraditional media and expand its audiences. They will help generate media interest in American Progress events and initiatives and support other media-related activities as needed.
The Broadcast Media Manager will serve as the lead producer of CAP Action’s podcast, “The Tent.” They will lead production meetings, edit and produce a new episode each week, oversee the podcast’s booking producer in securing guests, and help prepare the hosts for interviews. They will also brainstorm and execute ideas around promotion in conjunction with the podcast’s digital producer and coordinate with other members of the Press team on overall production of the podcast. Additionally, the Broadcast Media Manager will oversee the use and management of American Progress’ radio studio.
The candidate will also be the primary backup for the Senior Director of Broadcast Communications, stepping in to fill that position when the Senior Director is out of the office and conducting media trainings. Those responsibilities will include pitching and booking American Progress’ experts on TV outlets and handling incoming interview requests.
The Broadcast Media Manager will be driven by American Progress’ mission “to improve the lives of all Americans through bold ideas as well as strong leadership and concerted action, with the aim of not only changing the conversation, but changing the country.” They will join a dynamic team of colleagues to assist in strengthening the team’s work and supporting American Progress’ goals.
Responsibilities:
- Pitch, book, and prepare American Progress staff for radio and podcast interviews. Help support the Senior Director of Broadcast Communications in pitching and booking interviews and preparing American Progress staff for interviews.
- Pitch American Progress’ work to radio and podcast producers.
- Field inquiries from radio hosts and producers.
- Work with the Senior Director of Broadcast Communications to prepare interview briefings, write and disseminate talking points, cultivate relationships with the press, and establish media partnerships.
- Conduct regular trainings for policy experts on best practices for radio interviews.
- Serve as the lead producer for CAP Action’s weekly podcast, “The Tent,” collaborating with the show’s booking producer, leading the weekly production meeting, editing each week’s episode, and coordinating with other staff devoted to certain aspects in the production of the podcast.
- Manage and operate American Progress’ radio studio and support its TV studio operations.
- Collect media metrics for all broadcast media activity.
- Support general Press team activities.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements and qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience.
- Minimum of four years of media or communications experience.
- Strong writing skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to initiate projects and balance multiple projects at once.
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work well on a team.
- Commitment to American Progress’ mission and goals.
- Experience working in television or radio news is a plus.
- Experience with audio or video editing is a plus.
